Universities in Russia offer international students higher vocational education of sevaral qualification levels: Bachelor’s, Specialist’s and Master’s as well as postgraduate course.

Types of Russian universities:

  • Federal. It is a scientific and educational center for the entire Federal District. It can only be state and is under particular control of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science;
  • Standard (multidisciplinary). Foreign students more often study under contract, but there is always an opportunity to join the competition and get one of 15,000 scholarships provided by the Russian Government;
  • With a special status. Currently 2 universities have such status: MSU and SPSU;
  • National Research University. In addition to educational activities, such universities are involved in research activities;
  • Academy. It is a higher education body that prepares specialists in various areas: agriculture, medicine, economics, etc;
  • Institute. Basic higher education institution. All study forms, various fields of study.

Higher Education Fundamentals in Russia

Studying in Russian universities differs a lot from the principles applied by European and American universities. But such an approach allows to reach great results and to keep the tuition fee at low level.

Forms of education:

  • Full-time. It’s a form of study, when all the lectures take place within a university;
  • Extramural. Students of this education form spend just third of the study time at the educational institution, and the remaining time is spent on independent activities according to the university curriculum;
  • Part-time. Lectures are given in the evening time. Much time is dedicated to authonomous study;
  • Distance. The study is conducted online: lectures, seminars, and students and faculty interaction take place via Skype and other video communication means.

The qualification you get having finished the study and the course duration:

  • Bachelor: 4 years;
  • Specialist: 5-6 years;
  • Master: 2 years;
  • Postgraduate: 3-5 years;
  • Medical residency: 2 years.
