A total of 238,000 international students was at Russian universities in 2015/16. Most of them have come from the former Soviet Union (FSU) countries with Kazakhstan leading in terms of the number of applications submitted (36% of all applications from the FSU countries), followed by Uzbekistan (11%), Ukraine (11%), Turkmenistan (9%) and Belarus (8%).
