First Step Towards Studying in Russia
119 foreign nationals completed Tomsk Polytechnic University foundation programmes.
Youths from 30 countries came to the TPU for yearlong study of the Russian language and field-specific subjects in order to be able to enrol in degree programmes. In March, the university had to switch to online classes as part of COVID-19 lockdown. However, all students successfully completed the programme, passed the examinations and got certificates. Twenty five learners got excellent grades.
TPU foundation programmes traditionally attract many learners from China; students from Spain, Botswana, Honduras, Tanzania and other countries enroled in foundation programmes as well this year. The Dragon Oil company sends a group of Turkmen students to TPU every year. They take a foundation programme and then enrol in the programme “Oil and Gas Business.”
TPU offers several foundation courses depending on the education level pursued by the prospective student (bachelor’s, master’s or PhD) and the chosen field. Humanities students focus on the Russian language, literature, social science, history, geography and information science. Those who want to enrol in engineering on natural sciences programmes study the Russian language, history, physics, chemistry, mathematics, technical drawing and information science. TPU has an agreement with Siberian State Medical University; prospective students who want to enrol at Sibmed and become doctors study anatomy, Latin, Russian, chemistyr, physics, biology and mathematics at TPU.
A majority of students who completed TPU foundation programmes plan to continue their studies at the university. Following are the most popular programmes: Software Engineering (BSc), Information Technology and Computers (BSc, MSc), Materials Science and Technology (BSc, MSc), Mechatronics and Robotics (MSc), Electric Power Engineering and Electrical Engineering (MSc).
