Experts assessed universities worldwide against 50 criteria.

Britain’s Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) conducts annual surveys of universities which are awarded a rating of One Star to Five Stars +. The 2018 list included 14 Russian universities. Moscow State Institute of International Relations with Five Stars topped the Russian league. Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia, Siberian Federal University, Kazan Federal University and Samara University are among the six Russian higher education centres which were awarded Four Stars. Seven Russian universities, including Lobachevsky University, got Three Stars. Overall, QS gave 5 Stars + to ten universities, Five Stars to 44 universities and Four Stars to 63 universities.

Universities are rated for their performance across 50 areas pooled into eight basic criteria and four additional categories with separate evaluation of each. Research, teaching, graduate employability and internationalisation are among the key criteria which QS believes characterise world-class higher education centres.
