Russian universities mark Knowledge Day.

Universities across the country held assemblies and ran shows to welcome the new academic year; the first-years received their student cards and got acquainted with teachers. International students joined the celebrations. Ural Federal University professors wore Harry Potter saga costumes to extend best wishes to students and present their disciplines in a conversational style. UrFU Pro-rector Dmitry Bugrov took on the role of Albus Dumbledore. Students then had a pantomime game where they had to guess the names of professions. They also visited a student opportunities fair. Art and sport venues were set up in front of the university building. First-years could try boutonniere making techniques, paint a portrait, play table tennis, assemble a large UrFU jigsaw puzzle and hear theme lectures.

ITMO University arranged traditional ITMO.GO. holiday celebrations in St Petersburg’s Alexandrovsky Park. Teachers told about the available opportunities including internships abroad and student exchanges. Participants played chess, table tennis and hockey, worked out on rowing machines and joined sport clubs.

Tomsk State University combined a concert for the first-years with a talk show where teachers and students told about their research and projects. A TSU sport club held a traditional relay race which was won by students from the Institute of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science.

A solemn student initiation ceremony took place at I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University. The university rector and teachers gave their best wishes to the future doctors who pledged to carry on the university traditions and make all efforts to become skilled specialists. The participants saw the performance by cheerleaders and dancers as well as judo bouts in front of the main university building. In the university hall, newcomers were encouraged to sign up for any student society they liked.
