Kazan (Volga Region) Federal University
During its 220-year history, Kazan University has undergone a truly glorious path of establishment and development, having trained a whole cohort of great scientists, educators, public and political figures. Kazan University today is a well-developed educational and research complex. The university trains highly qualified specialists both for the benefit of their homeland and for foreign countries, contributing to stronger and wider multicultural ties between Russia and the world.
About organization
Kazan University is one of the oldest universities in Russia. On November 5, 1804, Alexander I signed the Confirmatory Charter of the Kazan Imperial University and its Statute.
Over the years, Kazan University has established various scientific schools that gained worldwide recognition. Non-Euclidean geometry was born here, created by mathematician Nikolai Lobachevsky, who played a prominent role in the development of the university, acting as its head for two decades.
The university is a center not only for science and scientific education but also for culture and enlightenment. It is the birthplace of the book industry in the region, the first provincial newspaper; it is responsible to promoting theater life, and much more. Throughout its history, the university served as alma mater for the founder of the Soviet state Vladimir Ulyanov-Lenin, writers Sergey Aksakov, Leo Tolstoy, Pavel Melnikov-Pechersky, Viktor Khlebnikov, composer Mily Balakirev, artist Valery Yakobi and others.

Botanical Garden
The Botanical Garden of Kazan University is considered one of the oldest facilities, having been founded in 1806. One of the key tasks Kazan University has set is to establish a center for scientific, educational and enlightenment activities of the Republic of Tatarstan based on the Botanical Garden
Astronomical Observatory
The KFU Astronomical Observatory complex is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. KFU is the only Russian university with a modern digital planetarium and astronomical observatories in both Turkey and Russia.
Sports Complexes
Kazan Federal University has 11 sports complexes and facilities for physical education and achieving sports records.
During the 2013 Summer Universiade, the university organized daily training sessions and sporting competitions.
Cultural and Sports Center
UNICS is the largest cultural, physical, recreational and sports center in Kazan, supported by KFU.
