The number of international students in Russia is growing
In the 2019/2020 academic year, the total number of international students in Russian universities amounted to 315 thousand people. It is approximately 8% of the total number of students in Russia: open data published by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education shows that more than 4 million students were studying in Russia at the end of December 2020. For comparison, in the 2014/2015 academic year, the number of foreign citizens studying in Russia was 183 thousand.
Among international students at Russian universities, most are from Kazakhstan (61,462) and Uzbekistan (40,020). The top 12 also includes Turkmenistan (36 389), China (29 617), Tajikistan (21 185), India (15 803), Ukraine (11 593), the Republic of Belarus (10 509), Egypt (8731), Azerbaijan (7884), Kyrgyzstan (7493) and the Republic of Moldova (4258).
Education in Russia is the most popular among students from the CIS and Asia. RUDN University remains the most popular among international students. In second place is KFU. The top 5 includes SPbPU and UrFU. The top 20 holds HSE University, Sechenov University, TPU, TSU, ITMO University and others. The number of foreigners choosing the universities outside of Moscow and St. Petersburg but in other Russian cities, from Kaliningrad to Vladivostok, is also growing.
What are the most popular directions among international students?
Percentage of students enrolled in engineering programmes in oil and gas, mechanical engineering, nuclear and heat power engineering, construction technologies, electronics and radio engineering, photonics, aviation and rocket and space technology, nanotechnology, land transport engineering and technology, electrical and heat power engineering, management of technical systems, technologies materials, engineering and technology of shipbuilding and water transport, physical and technical sciences and technology fields, is 19.89%.
In clinical medicine, health sciences and preventive medicine, nursing, fundamental medicine, and pharmacy, 20.46% of the foreigners' total number began their studies in Russia.
In third place is the Economics and Management speciality chosen by 17.77% of foreign citizens.
According to the Study in Russia website data, in 2020, 90,193 applications to study were sent by foreign applicants from 190 countries. The majority of applications sent through our website went to RUDN University (8.7% of the total number of applications). The second place shared between Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University and Kazan Federal University.
