Many prospective international students begin their studies at a Russian university by enrolling at the Preparatory Department. It gives them the opportunity to learn Russian in order to take a degree programme in the future. A majority of Preparatory Departments provide training in several fields such as engineering, humanities, medicine and biology and natural sciences. A foundation programme is focused on the Russian language and field-specific disciplines essential for further studies. Consequently, it is important to decide on the field of study as soon as possible, before enrolling at the Preparatory Department. For example, if you wish to study for a doctor, you have to choose medicine and biology; future programmers have to choose engineering, etc. As rule, a foundation course lasts two or three terms; classes begin on different dates. The table shows programmes that start in the summer or spring, as well as the courses open year round.
