About the University

Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) was founded in 1946 by Nobel laureates Pyotr Kapitsa, Lev Landau, and Nikolay Semenov to train the country’s research and engineering elite. From its very first years, it was involved in the highest-priority national initiatives, including the space and nuclear programs.

Over more than 75 years of history, MIPT has produced dozens of academicians, as well as outstanding scientists and inventors.

One of the key factors determining the level of its graduates’ training is the Phystech System, proposed by Pyotr Kapitsa and based on the following principles:

1. Carefully selecting the most gifted young people with a strong inclination toward creative work;

2. Involving leading researchers in teaching;

3. Providing individual support to each student as part of their training at basic institutes, with every student required to engage in research from their second or third year;

4. Ensuring that every student masters modern theoretical and experimental research methods by the time they graduate.
