About the University
SmolGU is one of the oldest universities in Russia. It was established on November 7, 1918, by a decree of the Council of People's Commissars. Among the first 8 university centers of Soviet Russia. Initially, the university combined humanities, natural sciences, and medical educational directions. In 1930, the university was reorganized into two independent institutes: the Smolensk State Pedagogical Institute of the People's Commissariat of Education of the RSFSR and the Smolensk State Medical Institute of the People's Commissariat of Health of the RSFSR. The 70-year history of the university as the largest pedagogical university in the region began. In 2005, the university regained its classical status. Today, it is developing as a multidisciplinary regional university center. Today, the university has 9 faculties, 34 departments, and over 300 teachers, including 54 professors and about 200 candidates of sciences, associate professors. About 5,000 students are studying at the university.
