BA in History Program is one of the fundamental academic programs at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of PFUR. Doing the four-year program the students study a wide range of social and natural science disciplines such as History, Economics, Jurisprudence, Mathematics, Computer Studies, Concepts of Modern Natural Science, as well as a range of specialized historical disciplines. 

The programs aims to shape a “classical historian”, able to understand mechanisms and patterns of historical process, well-read in the history of civilizations, historical periodization, regional and national history; in possession of modern methods of historical research; with a good command of information technologies and foreign languages. Teaching a modern historian means teaching an analyst capable of revealing cause-and-effect relations, aware of the origins and nature of phenomena and contradictions of the modern world. 

The students are lectured on compulsory fundamental disciplines in the sphere of History (around 30). Further specialization is pursued through a range of elective disciplines (around 50) in accordance with scientific interests of the students. Thus, the program envisages a number of educational paths in one of the following: Primitive Societies History, Ancient History, Ethnology, History of Europe and North America; History of Asia, Africa and Latin America; History of Ancient Rus and Medieval Russia; Modern and Contemporary History of Russia; Cultural History of Russia in the X-XX centuries, Source Studies and Historiography. Much attention is given to disciplines which shape practical skills of working with scientific texts, teach to conduct, record and present a scientific research, to express ideas competently and convincingly (orally and in writing), to speak before an audience, to hold a scientific discussion. These disciplines include Methods of Writing Scientific Works, Source Studies, Methodology of Research, Methodology of Writing Graduation Thesis, Archives in Scientific Research, Computer in Historical Research, etc.

History undergraduates do an intensive course of a European language (English, French, German or Spanish electively) or Eastern language (Arabic, Chinese or Farsi); compulsory course of the Latin language. Putting theoretical knowledge into practice is facilitated through a number of training courses (archaeological, educational, archival) as well as linguistic and professional internships. The students are actively engaged in research work, in particular in the framework of Students Scientific Societies; participate in scientific and research-to-practice conferences.

Internships and Training Courses

Archaeological field training is held on various archeological digs across Russia (Moscow region, Krasnodar region, Republic of Tyva, Crimea, etc.). The students join scientific expeditions of the Archaeology Institute of RAS, Russian Geographical Society.

Teaching training is held in schools of Moscow. The students acquire invaluable experience of teaching History and are given the opportunity to make use not only of their professional historical knowledge, but also of their communication, educational and organizational skills.

Archival internship is held in the archives of research institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences, State Archive of the Russian Federation (SARF), State Historical Museum, Manuscripts Department of Russian State Library (Pashkov House), where the students have a unique chance to literally "touch History", that is historical documents, living witnesses of centuries (chronicles, letters, diaries, manuscripts, etc.)

Linguistic training programs are held at Egyptian-Russian University (Egypt), Jordan University (Amman, Jordan), Shandong University, Xian University, Xiamen University, Weihai (China), Dublin School of English (Ireland), Inbispania (Madrid, Spain).

Inclusive Learning Programs are held at University of the Balearic Islands (Palma de Mallorca, Spain), Pierre Mendes University of France (Grenoble, France), etc.

Learning Objectives

The graduates are ready to address the following professional issues:

  • to collect and process information to ensure effective work of analytical centers, public and governmental bodies, mass media; effective decision-making of federal and local governmental bodies;

  • to provide informational support with respect to historical, cultural and regional ethnography aspects of various activities, conducted by enterprises and cultural institutions;

  • to be able to put in practice teaching skills and professional knowledge in teaching History at secondary schools;

  • to prepare reviews, analytical reports, abstracts, bibliographies, use databases and information systems on the subject of the research;

  • to put in practice the skills of archive work.
