Russian Universities Increase Representation in World Rankings

Education in Russia becomes more popular abroad.

Focused on vigorous development and world marketing strategies, Russian universities are a frequent choice of prospective international students, not only for quality education and affordable tuition fees, but also for a strong presence in prestigious QS, THE and ARWU world university rankings. QS overall rankings highlighted 22 Russian universities in 2016, 24 in in 2017 and 27 in 2018. Lomonosov Moscow State University, Saint Petersburg State University, Novosibirsk State University, National Research Tomsk State University, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, Higher School of Economics and National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University topped the Russian league. Russia also increased representation in QS BRICS 2019; the list included 101 domestic higher education centres versus 55 in QS BRICS 2017 and 68 in QS BRICS 2018.

More Russian universities tend to appear in rankings by subject. They traditionally show good results in engineering fields. For example, THE listed 28 Russian universities for engineering science and technology this year, up 18 from 2017. Twenty-six Russian higher education centres were listed for physical sciences, up 16 from last year. THE tables for computer science included 16 Russian universities, up 11 from the previous year. Lomonosov Moscow State University, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, ITMO National Research University are National Research Tomsk State University are among the leaders in teaching engineering science.

Russia also improved performance in other fields as nine Russian universities were ranked for life sciences compared to six a year ago. In 2018, THE ranked three Russian universities for psychology for the first time. Twenty-seven Russian universities appeared in the new THE University Ranking of Eurasia Nations; eighteen of them made the top 50 including Lomonosov Moscow State University, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University, Higher School of Economics, National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, Kazan Federal University, Novosibirsk State University, National Research Tomsk State University, ITMO National Research University, Samara University, Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, National University of Science and Technology MISIS and Lobachevsky University.

In 2018, 17 Russian universities entered the conservative AWRU rankings by subject published by Shanghai University, compared with 12 last year. Among the higher education centres that showed the best results for physics and instrument engineering were Lomonosov Moscow State University, Novosibirsk State University, National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University.
